Will my appearance change after jaw reconstruction?

Jaw surgery may cause changes in your appearance. The results of the surgery depend on your reason for having it, but you may notice improved symmetry in your face. We discreetly make incisions in order to ensure minimal scarring.

How long does jaw reconstruction surgery take?

Jaw surgery may take several hours. The time is based on how complex the reconstruction needs are.

How long is the recovery from jaw surgery?

Recovering from jaw surgery can take months. The initial healing typically lasts between six to eight weeks. During that time we recommend a liquid then soft diet and working your way up to a normal diet.

Oral hygiene is essential to your healing process. Your surgeon will discuss proper care. Complete bone healing and recovery can take up to a year.

What is the difference between maxillary and mandible surgery?

Maxillary refers to upper jaw surgery. Pain medication can be used to help relief the feeling of pressure. A decongestant and ice may also help with healing.

Mandible refers to lower jaw surgery. Because the mandible moves, chewing, yawning and speaking can be painful after initial surgery. Reducing the frequency of these actions, and using pain medication and ice can help keep pain low.

Do I need braces with orthognathic surgery?

Braces are commonly used before and after jaw surgery. They keep your jaw in the proper position and can help with healing and alignment after surgery.
